La Orquesta Ciudad de Vera (OCV) nació en una sala comunitaria de un pequeño pueblo cercano a Sorbas llamado Cariatiz.

Con ilusiones de grandeza, sus fundadoras Emma Randle y Alison Jackson la llamaron The Cariatiz Orchestra para alentar a los niños y músicos principiantes a "pensar en grande". La idea nació del hecho de que Emma y sus dos hijos tocaban el violín y el piano, pero no había ningún grupo musical al que pudieran unirse, ya que las bandas tradicionales del sur de España se componen de instrumentos de viento y metal.

The Orquesta Ciudad de Vera (OCV) was born in a community hall in a small town near Sorbas called Cariatiz.

With illusions of grandeur, its founders Emma Randle and Alison Jackson named it The Cariatiz Orchestra to encourage children and beginning musicians to "think big." The idea was born from the fact that Emma and her two children played the violin and piano, but there was no musical group that they could join, as traditional bands in southern Spain are made up of brass and wind instruments.

En el principio el grupo musical estaba formado por niños locales, tanto españoles como de otras nacionalidades, más algunos adultos que empezaban o que retomaban instrumentos que habían tocado en su infancia. Alison fue la directora, y el vecino Thomas Neukirch, un artista cuyos hijos estaban aprendiendo piano, se hizo violinista principal. Emma gestionó el grupo y tocaba con sus hijos y alumnos, y a menudo la orquesta fue descrita como una "orquesta familiar". Algunos intérpretes profesionales también ofrecieron su tiempo y experiencia para apoyar el proyecto, y la orquesta comenzó a dar conciertos no sólo en Cariatiz, sino en Mojácar, Níjar y Vera.

Initially the musical group was made up of local children, both Spanish and of other nationalities, plus some adults who were starting or returning to play instruments that they had played in their childhood. Alison was the director and neighbour Thomas Neukirch, an artist whose children were learning piano, became lead violinist. Emma organised the group and played in it with her children and pupils, and the group was often described as a "family orchestra". Some professional performers also offered their time and experience to support the project, and the orchestra began to give concerts not only in Cariatiz, but in Mojácar, Níjar and Vera.

En los 10 años transcurridos desde su fundación en 2010 hasta 2020, la orquesta creció de alrededor de 12 a más de 20 participantes y comenzó a atraer a músicos profesionales jubilados y otros músicos de alto nivel.

Emma y Alison ya tenían fuertes vínculos con la ciudad de Vera y su departamento cultural al actuar allí con el ex coro de mujeres, Los Rose Singers (también dirigido por Alison). En 2017, La Orquesta de Cariatiz actuó junto a Los Rose Singers en su tradicional Concierto anual del Día de la Paz y consolidó la relación que llevó a ofrecer un espacio de ensayo para la orquesta en Vera.

In the 10 years from its founding in 2010 to 2020, the orchestra grew from around 12 to more than 20 participants and began attracting retired professional musicians and other high-level players.

Emma and Alison already had strong ties to the city of Vera and its cultural department by performing there with the ex-ladies' choir, The Rose Singers (also led by Alison). In 2017, The Cariatiz Orchestra performed alongside The Rose Singers at their traditional annual Peace Day Concert and consolidated the relationship that led to the offer of a rehearsal space for the orchestra in Vera.

Después de unos años excelentes de servicio, Alison decidió retirarse de su puesto como directora en marzo de 2019 y pasó la batuta a Dave Sharp, MBE, ex miembro de la Royal Marines Band.

Bajo la dirección de Dave, la orquesta ha ido viento en popa, creciendo en número y capacidad hasta convertirse en una orquesta semiprofesional.

Alison falleció en 2024, pero los miembros de la orquesta la recuerdan con cariño.

After excellent years of service, Alison decided to retire as director in March 2019 and passed the baton into the capable hands of Dave Sharp, MBE, formerly a member of the Royal Marines Band.

Under Dave's direction, the orchestra has gone from strength to strength, growing in number and capacity to be a semi-professional orchestra. 

Alison sadly passed away in 2024, but she is fondly remembered by the orchestra members.

El crecimiento de la orquesta desde el primer pequeño ensayo hasta sus actuaciones actuales a gran escala ha sido una increíble fuente de asombro y alegría tanto para sus fundadores como para todos los que han participado en la iniciativa a lo largo de los años.

El lenguaje universal de la música es un gran unificador, y la orquesta se enorgullece de haber creado su propia comunidad y de haber participado en el entorno social más amplio de Almería.

The growth of the orchestra from the first small rehearsal to its current large-scale performances has been an incredible source of wonder and joy both to its founders and to everyone who has participated in the initiative over the years.

The universal language of music is a great unifier, and the orchestra is proud to have created its own community and have participated in the broader social environment of Almería.
